Utah implementation study reports gains—but evidence remains preliminary
Jordan School District and SchoolAI reported a 28% increase in a rubric-based measure of critical thinking across 13,882 student-AI conversations involving 82 teachers over two years. Higher-level reasoning classifications more than doubled, with stronger results among teachers who designed six or more AI activities.
Cost, service, risk & adoption
Cost—significant teacher-design and coaching time. Service—structured “thought partner” use may outperform open chat. Risk—overstating vendor evidence. Adoption—outcomes appeared tied to sustained teacher practice, not access alone.
What the evidence cannot tell us
This was vendor-sponsored, observational analysis without a control group; it measured the complexity of AI conversations, not independent achievement. It is promising implementation evidence, not proof of causal learning gains.
