Evidence favors AI-assisted human tutoring

Stanford found strong evidence for human-led tutoring, emerging evidence for AI supporting tutors, and insufficient evidence for fully automated tutoring. AI recommendations increased lesson-topic mastery by four percentage points overall and nine points with lower-rated tutors.

Cost—augmentation may improve tutor productivity; Service—better instructional consistency; Risk—AI-only programs suffer low engagement and uncertain outcomes; Adoption—measure usage, dosage, mastery, and subgroup effects before scaling.
