Microsoft offers districts enforceable AI contract protections
On September 9, Microsoft, the AFT and UFT announced a standard that districts can incorporate into Microsoft customer agreements. It prohibits using student or educator data to train AI, selling or repurposing that data, student tracking and unsupervised high-risk decisions. Districts control retention and deletion and may terminate agreements or seek damages for violations.
Why it matters for leaders
Treat this as a ready-made benchmark, not merely a Microsoft concession. Compare every major AI vendor’s terms against it and require exceptions to be documented.
Cost, service, risk & adoption
Cost—contract review and monitoring workload, with no stated license increase. Service—makes controlled deployment easier. Risk—materially stronger recourse than policy statements. Adoption—union participation could reduce staff resistance.
