AI is increasing the complexity of special-education disputes
State dispute-resolution agencies report receiving lengthy filings containing incorrect IDEA interpretations, erroneous filing requirements and hallucinated case law. Evidence linking AI to overall complaint growth remains anecdotal. Separately, written state complaints rose 56% between 2023–24 and 2025–26 across 35 reporting states; due-process complaints rose 7%. Staff use of AI for IEP or Section 504 drafting reached 57% in 2025, up 18 percentage points.

Cost—more legal and case-management review time. Service—AI can improve parent access to terminology and meeting preparation. Risk—PII disclosure and false legal claims. Adoption—existing staff use makes approved workflows urgent.
